Not all Sydney roofing contractors are the same so if you want a good one, you need to verify that the roofing contractor has a proper business license and proper insurance. You just can't assume that everybody has a business license. 

You want to verify that that contractor has the proper license to be on your property. 

I think the number one thing that I would tell somebody finding a good roofing contractor is background and history, how long they've been around and what they can and can't do. 

You want to be able to understand that if you're looking for a roofing contractor, so it’s important to check their references. 

Being able to actually look at some of the things that a roofer or that roofing contractor has done in the past, not just what he says he's done, but actually what he has put his hands on or what that company has put their hands on and what has actually been achieved and done in the past. 

Of course no one's perfect and mistakes do happen and you may see a couple of unhappy customers, but you want to see that the majority of their customers are happy. 

And even the ones that maybe were not too happy in the beginning, but they've taken the initiative to make sure they eventually become more satisfied customers, then that says a lot about their character and work ethics. 

It's pretty standard (and most clients are educated nowadays) that you want to make sure that they're licensed and insured.

Apart from having the right credentials, you also want someone who's reliable. Someone who says that they're going to be there at a certain time, they show up at that certain time and someone who's honest.

You don't just go with one roofing company. Get your estimates from two or three roofing companies and then you see whether they gonna offer you a price based on the quality... based on doing the work.

You're looking for someone that's going to give you quality work and stand behind their work and knowing that they have longevity and that they are going to be there in the long run.

That's the type of roofing company you want. Not someone that's going to come in and just do the roof and then a few months later they no longer exist.

If somebody comes knocking on your door, those are storm chasers and they're not going to be local and you're not going to want some intruder coming into your house. 

The other thing is if a roofing contractor is asking you for money upfront, that would be something I would recommend you avoid because if the roofing contractor needs money from you to do the job, that means they don't have enough money to do the job.

So you probably don't want that roofing contractor working on your house anyway because if something goes wrong, how is he going to fix it? 

There's been a lot of scam in the past… with some people taking people's deposits… and some companies who are not strong enough to do the job. That would be something that you should be very wary of. 

The other thing is this… if you get a rock bottom price from a roofing contractor, that should NOT be something you should get too excited about. That should actually raise a red flag with you and make you worry. 

Why? Because there’s a good chance that they're probably not carrying the proper licenses that they need and the proper insurance. 

Sure, they might have a very nice website… but personally speaking with them or even better, meeting with the people from the roofing company, can make a big difference. 

You will know deep down inside if they are the ones you want to hire and work on your roofing or gutter requirements.
